The holiday region of Gstaad-Saanenland in the Bernese Oberland has an interesting mix of winter visitors: while a good number of stars and celebrities stay centrally in the village and the chalets of Gstaad, there are also great options for family holidays in some of the smaller neighbouring areas. Gstaad is a name that sounds like an invitation to dream, with its main street shops bearing names as select as Gucci or Prada, and its prestigious hotels where stars and royalty stay. Gstaad is definitely a destination unlike any other. This beautiful place is also a famous winter sports resort. It offers high-level facilities: a breathtaking sports centre (access included in the price of the skipass), many activities and a large skiable area. Over 250km of pistes, at altitudes of close to 3000m, are available to skiers and snowboarders in the winter. Several snowparks and many sledge tracks as well as 80km of traditional cross-country skiing and skating are available to visitors. Hikers can enjoy some 120km of winter walking trails. Among the more unusual activities on offer is “Eisstock” (similar to curling) in the centre of Gstaad, and glacier-skiing and heli-skiing. Finally, it would be a shame to leave cosmopolitan Gstaad without taking a trip on the little train, which runs accross the mountains and links the different resorts of the “Ski Gstaad” area.
